WWE 2K17 is one of those games that feels like it’s almost great but trips over its own feet. The gameplay? Solid, smooth, and way better than previous years. The grappling system is tight, reversals feel more balanced, and matches have that unpredictable, back-and-forth energy that makes WWE fun to watch. But man, the lack of a proper Showcase Mode is a letdown. MyCareer mode tries to fill the gap, but unless you love grinding through promo battles that feel like awkward text exchanges, it’s not exactly thrilling. Visually, it looks decent for its time, but some character models are straight-up weird. Brock Lesnar looks like he was scanned straight from real life, but then you get guys like Dean Ambrose who look like they were made in a rush.
WWE 2K17 is very reaction-based and challenging too. You’ve got to feel the momentum of the match in order to correctly use your limited amount of rechargeable reversals. The environment gives you feedback as you taunt into corners and get flung over the guard rail and into the crowd. You constantly feel the weight of your superstar and how they react to their surroundings. While 2K15 was a disapointment for a lot of people, 2K16 was a big step in the right direction. 2K17 on the other hand, is a lot better than both of them. They have learned from many mistakes.
